Croatia is an Eastern European country that is becoming more attractive for Study abroad students because of its diversity. Almost the entire western and southern part of the country is made of up the coastline with the Adriatic sea.
Students who love water sports and sea adventures would find a paradise in Croatia. There are hundreds of islands to explore. Inland, there are numerous castles, mountains, and rivers to occupy a student’s free time.
This country of about 4 million inhabitants, sits almost at the crossing point between western and Eastern Europe. Which makes it a perfect mix of different cultures.
The location of the country makes it easy to travel to countries like Austria, Italy, Hungary, and Slovenia.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Croatia depends on a lot of factors like location and lifestyle. However, for students on a budget, the average cost of living should be between 400 and 700 Euros monthly.
That amount should cover the cost of rent, food, utilities, transportation, and other expenses.
Below are the costs of specific of some items in Croatia (the local currency the Kuna (Kn) is exchanged at 6.83 to a dollar)

  • A meal in a modest restaurant – $6.59
  • Coke/Pepsi – $1.87/ 0.33liter
  • Water – $1.29/ 0.33 liter of bottle
  • Milk – $0.81/liter
  • Bread – $0.85/500kg
  • Rice – $1.56/kg
  • Beef – $8.84/kg
  • Tomato – $1.40
  • Transport (monthly pass) – $51.26
  • Taxi – $0.88/km
  • Utilities – $174.89/month
  • Internet – $23.16/month
  • Rent – $319/month (city center for 1 bedroom apartment
  • Rent – $237.23/month (outside city center for 1 bedroom apartment

Tuition Fees in Croatia

The tuition fee in Croatia for international students varies according to the level, the University of choice and the field of study.
However, undergraduates in the humanities, arts and social sciences should hope to pay between $878 and $2416.64 per year. These are subject to changes each year.
Tuition fees for technical science courses should be about $3,300 per year while science and medical sciences should be about $4000 per year.
The specific tuition for each University for both graduate and undergraduate courses can be requested from the University you’re seeking admission into.

Visa Requirements

International students to Croatia must obtain a temporary residence permit (which has a duration of one year) before they are allowed to attend classes. Also, students coming from abroad must obtain an entry visa to Croatia.
Visa applications can be submitted at the consulate or embassy in your country. Submission can be done through email or in person.
Residence permit application, on the other hand, can be submitted to the nearest police station in Croatia. This is applicable to those who were already in the country using an entry visa.
However, for those still in their home country, a residence permit application can be submitted at the local Croatian embassy while applying for an entry visa.
The process before a visa is approved can take up to 3 months. So students must apply on time to factor in the school calendar.

Documents Required for Visa Applications

  • A passport sized color photograph
  • Valid passport (both original and photocopy)
  • EU students can submit identity card instead of the passport
  • Proof that you have secured admission and accommodation in Croatia
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Proof that you have enough money to support yourself while in Croatia
  • Application fee:
  • The application fee for a temporary residence permit for students is about $73.
  • Admission requirements

All Universities open to international students in Croatia have an International Cooperation Office. This department is mainly to provide the required information for students coming to that school. So students are advised to contact this office for the relevant information.
Generally, though, undergraduate students must possess a high school diploma or certificate that is recognized internationally before being accepted to an undergraduate course.
Students who wish to validate their high school diploma can submit their certificates to the Educational and Teacher Training Agency.
Foreign students who attended vocational high schools can submit their certificates for validation here, for approval for an undergraduate course.
Graduate and Postgraduate students – international students wishing to further their graduate or postgraduate programs in Croatia must submit their certificates for validation at the Office for Academic Recognition of Foreign Higher Education Qualification.
All universities offering graduate and postgraduate programs for foreign students have that department. So the request is normally sent to the university concerned
