Applications are currently ongoing for the Melville Hughes Scholarships 2018. The Melville Hughes Scholarship was established with a bequest from an anonymous donor. The scholarship is awarded to medical graduates undertaking a graduate research degree in the in the field of surgical studies.
This scholarship is one of several trust-funded scholarships available through the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences for students who have applied for, or are enrolled in a graduate research degree of the faculty.
The duration of the scholarship is up to 1 year. The scholarship provides a fortnightly allowance of approximately $80,000 per year (pro rata).
To be considered for this scholarship, you must:
- be a medical graduate.
- be applying for or enrolled in a graduate research degree of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.
- must have been born in Victoria or be of Victorian-born parents.
- be undertaking advanced training programs in surgery or have completed their surgical training.
- not hold a stipend as this scholarship may not be held in conjunction with other scholarships.

The scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences on the recommendation of the Melville Hughes Scholarship Committee, comprising of at least three professors of surgery.
Successful candidates will be advised of the outcome of their application according to the Faculty’s published timelines .
Students considering applying are advised to discuss their intention with the Head of the relevant department of surgery at least two months prior to the closing date.
